Australian leg-spinner Steven Smith has signed to play during Worcestershire's Twenty20 Cup campaign in the 2010 season.
Subject to clearance from Cricket Australia, leg-spinning all-rounder Smith, who made his international debut during Australia's two-run Twenty20 International win over Pakistan, will join up with the Royals as they attempt to make an impact on the shortest form of the game.
Smith had earnt his international call-up on the back of strong performances for New South Wales, both in the KFC Domestic Big Bash and the inaugural Champions League, of which the New South Wales were the winners.
"I have been watching Steve's progress over the last year and I have spoken to Phil Jaques about him and there is no doubt he is a highly talented young player who has already proved he can perform on the big occasion," Director of cricket Steve Rhodes said.
"We are determined to improve our Twenty20 performances this year and we are allowed two overseas players in this competition. We will be a young squad and I know Steve will fit in with what we want to achieve. His is a very exciting signing."
