This year both Leeds Rugby and Yorkshire County Cricket will be joining up to host the annual Children’s Day event at Headingley Carnegie Stadium on Sunday 9th June 2013 between 10.30am-4pm.
To celebrate the launch of this year’s event pupils from Blackgate Primary School in Tingley joined Leeds Rhinos winger Ben Jones-Bishop and Yorkshire County Cricket’s Ryan Sidebottom in a friendly Tug of War competition on the famous Headingley Carnegie cricket pitch.
Children’s Day has a long tradition in Leeds, with the first being held in 1922 and running annually at Roundhay Park until 1963. The event was then revived at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in 2008 in a partnership between the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund and Leeds Rugby Foundation and has now become one of the most popular events in the summer holidays, with over 5000 people attending last year.
Special guests on the day will include Leeds Rhinos players, stars from Emmerdale, taking part in an All-Star Cricket Match, and Ronnie the Rhino and Terry the Tyke will compete in the popular Mascot Race.
There will be lots of fun activities for families and children to join in with, from pony rides, to Jorvik Viking Centre workshops, to making ‘Wanted’ posters with West Yorkshire Police. As always there will be rugby and cricket competitions and plenty of chances to have a go at something sporty.
Entrance to Children's Day is free and all of the activities will be free. The event is being organised by Leeds Rugby Foundation, Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and the Garry Chappelow Memorial Fund.
