"Jofra Archer will be Steve Smith’s biggest challenge" - Shane Warne

Legendary Australian bowler Shane Warne has backed Jofra Archer to make the difference for England following a disappointing first Ashes test.

"Lord’s is set to be a huge Test and there is plenty for us at the Rajasthan Royals to keep an eye on”, Warne said following the announcement Jofra Archer would make his Test debut. “It will go to show what a great squad we have. Steve [Smith] has been the star of the show so far but now we have Jofra joining his Royals teammates Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler.

“Obviously I would love to see Steve go on and score a hundred in every single innings for the rest of the Ashes but with Jofra coming in I think he’ll be set to face his biggest challenge yet and this could make the difference in the upcoming Tests. No one likes to face tall 90mph bowlers.

“The loss of Anderson was such a blow for England and they will really need Jofra to step up but I think he has all the attributes to do just that. They’ll have faced each other a lot in the nets so if anyone will have a plan it’ll be Jofra.”

The sentiment was echoed by Royals fast bowler Jaydev Unadkat, who has played with Archer for two years in the IPL.

“Jofra has been the talking point for the country and around the world in cricket for so long now”, the 27-year-old commented. “The way he has started his career for England with the World Cup will help him immensely and is something he can build on. Having played with him, I can tell you he is a special talent and he is on the right track – he has everything to be a great of the game.”

“James Anderson’s shoes are very big ones to fill! But Jofra can do it, because he has that crucial knack of picking up wickets. You have to be a match-winner to be in this England team and Jofra is one of those. It will be great to see how he copes with the longer format of the game.”
