Punjab Kings won the toss and elected to field first, considering their record batting first at the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Quinton de Kock lost his wicket early on to Deepak Hooda. Ishan Kishan too perished in the 7th over to Ravi Bishnoi, bringing Mumbai Indians under extreme pressure. Rohit Sharma held one end together and made a valuable contribution of 63 runs in 52 balls on a tricky pitch. Suryakumar Yadav too played an important hand with a knock of 33 in 27 deliveries. The Pandya brothers failed once again with the bat and could not do much to trouble the scorers. In the end, Mumbai Indians crawled to an under par total of 131 for 6 in 20 overs. Ravi Bishnoi bowled beautifully as he picked up 2 wickets for 21 runs in his spell of 4 overs.

The openers of Punjab Kings got their team off to a flyer and collected 53 runs for the 1st wicket. Mayank Agarwal was the first to be dismissed as he was foxed by Rahul Chahar. Chris Gayle came in at number 3 and joined hands with KL Rahul to ensure a comfortable chase. Both KL Rahul and Gayle were patient until the 12th over and then toyed around with the bowlers later to get closer to the target. Gayle totally dominated the bowlers after taking time to set his eyes on the game. He finished with an unbeaten at 43 and helped win the game for Punjab by 9 wickets in the 18th over. KL Rahul too played a captain’s knock of 60 in 52 balls.
