The Adelaide Strikers have re-signed star New Zealand duo Suzie Bates and Sophie Devine for WBBL|05.

Dubbed the ‘Smash Sisters’ for their entertaining, boundary-riddled opening stands, the Kiwi pair are set to attract home fans to Karen Rolton Oval in the tournament’s first standalone season.

Head coach Luke Williams is delighted to welcome back the powerful pair.

“We’re extremely happy to have Suzie and Soph back in Adelaide this year,” Williams said.

“They both bring exceptional personality, talent and leadership to our young group and we can’t wait to see them on the field again.

“It’s a real treat for the fans too. We know the fans have really embraced both girls here and how much they enjoy watching them play.

“We really feel like we’re set for a big season ahead.”

Devine was a standout on the field last year, earning the title of Strikers MVP for WBBL|04, after finishing the home and away season with 556 runs, behind only leading runscorer Ellyse Perry of the Sydney Sixers.

She became the first player – female or male – to hit 1000 Big Bash runs for the Strikers and is the club’s top all-time runscorer with 1405 from 50 WBBL matches.

The powerhouse opening batter thumped the three highest scores by a Striker last summer with totals of 99 not out, 95 and 89, while also claiming 14 wickets, including the first five-wicket haul for a female Striker.

Captain Bates has penned a two-year extension with the Strikers, through to the end of WBBL|06, with the former New Zealand skipper set to again bring leadership of international standards.

Bates joined the side in WBBL|03, where she became the second Striker to compile a WBBL century, after spending two summers with the Perth Scorchers.

A clever batter and reliable fielder, Bates finished inside the top five tournament runscorers last season with 421 runs and has also completed 19 catches in just two seasons in blue.

The Adelaide Strikers begin their WBBL campaign on Saturday, 19 October at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.
