Afghanistan v West Indies in India: Preview, Match Schedule, Team Squads and Series Predictions

Afghanistan v West Indies in India

All you need to know about the Afghanistan v West Indies in India series comprising 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and a one-off Test.

West Indies last played India in a full-fledged tour which included 3T20Is, 3 ODIs and 2 Tests. They will now take on Afghanistan in another proper tour of India where they will play 3 ODIs, 3 T20Is and a one-off Test match.

All these games will be played at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee international cricket stadium in Lucknow. The series was earlier scheduled to be played at the Rajiv Gandhi international cricket stadium Dehradun but was rescheduled.

In the last 5 ODIs played between the two teams, Afghanistan have won 2 and West Indies have won two. Their last encounter was in the 2019 ODI World Cup where West Indies posted a huge 311-run total on the board. In reply, Afghanistan for bowled out for 288. The previous two matches were played in the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier in 2018 when Afghanistan won in both of them.

Rashid Khan has replaced Gulbadin Naib as both the ODI and T20I skipper of Afghanistan. Likewise, Kieron Pollard has replaced Jason Holder as the ODI captain and Carlos Brathwaite as the T20I leader.

The Calypso Kings will be without big names like Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Sunil Narine in the series. While Russell and Narine are not fit enough to be a part of the squad, West Indies cricket seem to have moved on from Chris Gayle who first seemed to retired after the India series but later expressed his availability for the future series as well.

Following the automatic cycle after the ODI World Cup and keeping in mind the upcoming 2020 T20 World Cup, both teams have given young faces a chance in their team. While Afghanistan have made wholesale changes to both their squads, West Indies have awarded Brandon King and Hayden Walsh Jr. who impressed in the Caribbean Premier League 2019. Alzarri Joseph also makes a comeback to all the formats after recovering from injury.

The Afghanistan series against West Indies will kick off with three ODIs (November 6, 9 and 11), followed by three T20Is (November 14, 16 and 17), and a one-off Test, commencing November 27.
