The Australian Men's Cricket Team has been defeated by South Africa by 21 runs in a rain-affected Gillette T20I at Metricon Stadium on the Gold Coast.

Heavy rain early in the evening saw a delayed start and the match shortened to 10 overs per side, with 12,866 people attending the first international cricket match at the venue.

South Africa batted first, posting 6-108, before Australia was restricted to 7-87 in reply.

Glenn Maxwell was the star for Australia, top-scoring with 38 off 23 deliveries after claiming 1-14 from two overs and taking two catches.

Andrew Tye (2-18) and Nathan Coulter-Nile (2-19) claimed multiple wickets.

Australia will now meet India at The Gabba on Wednesday, for the first match of a three-game Gillette T20I Series.
