Andre Russell fires Jamaica Tallawahs to the top of the table
A fantastic all-round display from Andre Russell fired Jamaica Tallawahs to the top of the points table after they set a target of 159 runs and defeated Trinbago Knight Riders by 19 runs in the 19th Match of the Caribbean Premier League in Jamaica.
Trinbago Knight Riders opted to bowl first after winning the toss. Chris Gayle (0) fell in the very second over while Chadwick Walton (16) was run out in the fourth providing an early setback for Jamaica Tallawahs.
Rovman Powell (44) and Kumar Sangakkara (23) took the team to 43 for two at the powerplay mark. Powell and Sangakkara shared a 72-run stand for the third wicket and scored at over eight runs an over.
Cooper returned in the 13th over to remove both Sangakkara and Powell, leaving Jamaica Tallawahs at 92 for four after 13 overs.
Despite losing Imad Wasim (1) and Shakib Al Hasan (10), Russell (44) scored a 24-ball cameo laced with five fours and three sixes to take Jamaica Tallawahs to 158 for seven in 20 overs.
In the chase, Trinbago Knight Riders got off to a poor start, losing Brendon McCullum (6) and Colin Munro (1) in successive overs and reached 40 for two in six overs.
Some tight bowling from the Jamaica Tallawahs upped the pressure and it resulted in the wickets of William Perkins (12) and Umar Akmal (11), who failed to make any telling contributions.
At the halfway mark, Trinbago Knight Riders needed 99 runs with six wickets in hand. With Hashim Amla (42) holding steady at one end, Denesh Ramdin (31) plundered a four and two sixes in the 14th over.
However, Jamaica Tallawahs fought back by removing Amla, Dwayne Bravo (13), Cooper (1) and Sunil Narine (0) in the next three overs, leaving Trinbago Knight Riders to score 38 runs from 18 balls.
The task proved to be too much for the lower order as Trinbago Knight Riders only managed 139 for nine while Russell (4-23) completed a four-wicket haul.
With this 19-run victory, Jamaica Tallawahs ascended to the top of the points table. For his fantastic all-round display, Russell took home the man of the match award.
