Angelo Mathews to miss T20I series in Australia
Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews has been ruled out of the upcoming Twenty20 International series against Australia after failing to recover from a hamstring injury.
The 29-year-old suffered the injury during the second T20I against South Africa in Johannesburg where he scored an unbeaten 54 to take his team through in a tense chase of 114.
Since then, Mathews missed the third game of the series and also the One-Day International series against the Proteas following that.
Dinesh Chandimal led the team in the final T20I while Upul Tharanga was handed over the reins for the 50-over series, which Sri Lanka had already lost 3-0 with two more games to go.
A statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket revealed that the selectors will decide on the captain for the T20I series in Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
"The selection meeting on Tuesday will decide the squad and the captain who will lead in the three matches," a board statement said.
"The team will arrive in Canberra on Monday the 13th."
The three-match T20I series between Australia and Sri Lanka will be played between 17th and 22nd February in Melbourne, Victoria and Adelaide.
In the absence of Test internationals, Australia will be led by Aaron Finch and will have Justin Langer, Ricky Ponting and Jason Gillespie as support staffs.
