Sri Lanka have called upon the middle-order batsman Angelo Perera to replace the injured fast bowler Nuwan Pradeep for the ongoing One-Day International series against Australia.

Pradeep's last appearance for Sri Lanka was in the first Test match against Australia in Pallekele and a hamstring injury ruled him out of the second and third Tests as well.

The 29-year-old was set to take part in the first ODI against Australia, but an aggravation of his hamstring injury a few minutes prior to the toss forced him to miss the game on Sunday in Colombo.

Perera was a part of the Sri Lanka A team which toured England in July and had a decent outing in the List A games against England Lions and Pakistan A.

In the 2015-16 Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka, Perera hit 450 runs at an average of 40.90 for the Nondescripts Cricket Club.

In the first ODI against Australia, Sri Lanka fielded a playing XI consisting of as many as seven spin-bowling options and all-rounders Angelo Mathews and Thisara Perera were the seam bowlers.

Given the strategy Sri Lanka seem to have adopted for the ODIs against Australia, the selectors have not opted for a fast bowler to replace Pradeep.

Sri Lanka lost the first ODI by three wickets as Australia managed to prevail in a low scoring encounter by chasing down a target of 228 runs in 46.5 overs.
