Australia A suffered a 16-run loss against India A in the opening 50-over clash at Allan Border Field in Brisbane today.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field with fast-bowler Belinda Vakarewa (2-50) breaking through early to remove opener Priya Punia (8).

Vakarewa had another wicket two overs later, with the dismissal of Dayalan Hemalatha (0) brought Veda Krishnamurthy (113) to the crease.

The Indian captain combined with opener Shafali Verma (124) for a 119-run partnership which gave the hosts the upper hand.

Spinner Molly Strano (1-29) showed good discipline with the ball and was rewarded with the big wicket of Verma, however Krishnamurthy carried on unfazed reaching triple figures at better than a run-a-ball.

Australia A captain Tahlia McGrath (3-48) led a late fightback with three wickets, India A finishing its innings 9-312.

It was a similar story for Australia A in reply with the hosts reaching 33 before Georgia Redmayne (20) was dismissed followed two overs later by Bridget Patterson (6).

McGrath and Heather Graham (27) came to the crease, the duo getting their side back on track with a 70-run partnership.

Graham soon found herself back on the sidelines, but McGrath was able to carry on with the support of all-rounder Annabel Sutherland (52).

Contributions from Australia A’s lower order including an unbeaten 32 to Strano got the home side within sight of victory but losing wickets at regular intervals halted their momentum, Australia A finishing its innings 9-296.
