Montreal Tigers (129-6) had no option but to win in order to keep their chances alive in the Global T20 Canada League and they did just that by beating Edmonton Royals (113-10) by 16 runs.
The top 3 batsman of the Montreal Tigers - Dwayne Smith (8), Sunil Narine (9), and George Worker (7) were not able to leave an impact. However, the next three did their bit as Moses Henriques slammed a run-a-ball half century. While Sikandar Raza and Najibullah Zadran contributed 20s, the Tigers' managed to reach 129 for 6.
This may seem to be a minuscule total on most pitches but on a slow wicket at the Maple Leaf Stadium, this was quite a competitive total. For Royals, Wayne Parnell looked at his best after a while as he picked up three wickets in his four overs.
In reply, although Luke Ronchi batted well (30), fellow opener Andre Fletcher (9) could not read the mystery spin of Sandeep Lamichhane (4-16-1) and was cleaned up. The following batsman more or less met the same fate as Peter Siddle rendered the Royals' batting order tumbling. Siddle looked in full flow and ended with match figures of 3.1-13-4. He was well assisted by Kevon Cooper who also picked up two wickets.
After the match, Edmonton Royals are at the 4th spot in the points table while Montreal Tigers are at 5th. With this 16 run victory, Montreal Tigers have still kept their hopes alive of qualifying to the playoffs but they will have to win all their matches from here on to do so.
