Barbados triumph over Guyana in CPL season opener
Kieron Pollard's all-round performance led the way for Barbados Tridents as they convincingly defeated Guyana Amazon Warriors by 49 runs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2015 season opener.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Barbados got off to a shoddy start as they lost opening pair of Dwayne Smith (13) and Dilshan Munaweera (6) by the middle of the fifth over with just 23 runs on the board.
Shoaib Malik (39) along with Jonathan Carter (25) formulated a 44-run partnership stand for the third wicket by scoring over seven runs per over to stabilize Tridents' innings.
However Sunil Narine (2-22) managed to get rid of both the settled batsman as Carter holed out a slog sweep straight to long-on whereas Malik was stumped by Ramdin while trying to accelerate the run-rate.
Pollard (48), leading from the front, showed an excellent display of counter attacking cricket in concluding stages of the Tridents innings.
Along with Malik, he concocted a 56-run partnership stand for the fifth wicket to help the Tridents cross 150-run mark.
Chasing a target of 159 runs, the Guyana Amazon Warriors failed to get a single partnership going throughout their innings with Tillakaratne Dilshan (24) and Brad Hodge (26) failing to capitalize on good starts.
The remaining Guyana batting line-up capitulated without a fight, allowing the Tridents to score an easy win.
Ravi Rampaul (3-16), Robin Peterson (3-31) and Pollard (2-20) did the heavy lifting as Jason Holder (1-21) chipped in with the prized wicket of Shivnarine Chanderpaul (4) and a run-out of Lendl Simmons (1).
Pollard was awarded the man-of-the-match award for his all-round performance with bat and ball.
The tournament now moves on to Gros Islet, where St Lucia Zouks will face Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel in the second contest of the 2015 edition of the CPL tournament.
