Indian fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar will miss out on the third Test match against New Zealand due to a back strain which he picked up during the second match in Kolkata.

In the place of Kumar, the Indian selectors have picked the uncapped right-arm fast bowler Shardul Thakur in the squad for the third game.

In India’s 178-run win at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Kumar’s five-wicket haul in the first innings was instrumental in the team taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

Kumar is the second Indian bowler to miss out on action due to injury or sickness after Ishant Sharma missed the first two games due to chikungunya.

The 24-year-old Thakur has so far played 39 first-class matches and has 142 wickets at an impressive average of 27.11 while accounting for 10 five-wicket hauls in his career so far.

In his most recent first-class game for India A in September, Thakur took five wickets against Australia A in the second unofficial Test in Brisbane.
