For the third week in a row rain had a major influence on fixtures in the Cheshire County league. Only Sale 2nd XI’s game at home to Lindow went the distance in what proved to be a close finish.

IS Recruitment sponsored Sale were asked to bat first and got off to a confident start as Mike Bishop and Joe Cannon added 57 for the 2nd wicket.

Sale then lost 3 quick wickets to slow the scoring before captain Gareth Watterson joined Bishop to take the score to 130.

Bishop finally fell for a well-crafted 86 just as Sale were looking to accelerate, eventually closing the innings on a below par 168-8.

Despite losing 2 early wickets to Rob Merga, Lindow looked on course for the win as Henry James and Jamie Peel added 105 for the 3rd wicket.

The loss of James for 61 checked their reply, as Peel was left stranded on 69 not out as the visitors finished 5 short of the win. A quirk of the points system meant that Lindow picked up only 6 points (one less than an abandonment), and Sale 9 points.

Sale 1st XI’s match at Urmston was called off at lunchtime with the ground waterlogged.

On Sunday Sale 3rd XI were facing a tough task when rain caused a halt to play. Visitors Alderley Edge had posted 259-6 in 45 overs. Will Valentine (133 not out) led the way as Chris Scott picked up 3-53 for Sale.

Sale had reached 33 without loss when the rain arrived.

Sale 4th XI enjoyed a close game at Widnes 3s. Sale posted 145 all out in 34 overs, Jared Moran (48 not out) and Lan Gururaj (32) were the top scorers.

Widnes had reached 131-8 when rain caused the abandonment with 6 overs to go, Jonny Dicken leading the way with 3 wickets.

Earlier in the week Sale Silverbacks lost their over 40s game at Davenham after posting a below par 90-7 off 20 overs. Ian Habershon (32 not out) and Paul Hanrahan (22).

The home side coasted to victory in the 17th over, debutant Lionel Thompson the pick of the bowling with 2-12.

On Saturday Sale 1st XI welcome Marple to Dane Road and the 2nd XI visit Heaton Mersey. On Sunday the 3rd XI travel to Didsbury and the 4th XI host Ashley 5s.
