Bowlers steer Rangpur Riders to play-off
Rangpur Riders 147-6 (Mithun 50no) beat
Khulna Titans 128-8 (Klinger 44) by 19 runs
38th game, Bangladesh Premier League, Dhaka
An unbeaten half century from Mohammad Mithun and a collective effort from the bowlers provided vital as Rangpur Riders completed a 19 run victory in the 38th game of the Bangladesh Premier League in Dhaka to make it to the play-offs.
Khulna have also joined the top four along with Dhaka Dynamites and Comilla Victorians despite the defeat as the tournament reaches its closing stage.
Khulna won the toss and decided to bowl first. Abu Jayed (1-14) struck early to remove Ziaur Rahman (8) but Chris Gayle (38) provided the much-needed momentum at the start but Brendon McCullum (15) fell in the final over of powerplay during which Rangpur were positioned 49 for two.
Just as Gayle was settling in and starting to look dangerous he mistimed a slog sweep off Mohammad Irfan (1-20) and were reduced to 72 for three in the 11th over.
As the innings was losing momentum, Mithun (50 not out) provided the much needed late flourish that included three sixes off the final over to complete his half-century and lift Rangpur's total to 147 for six in the 20 overs.
In reply, Nazmul Hossain Shanto (20) and Michael Klinger (44) provided a solid opening start of 60 runs off eight overs but once they fell, the innings lost momentum completely and Khulna were reduced to 97 for six.
Despite, Jofra Chioke Archer's (19) 11-ball cameo, Khulna managed only 128 for eight as they lost the game by 19 runs.
