Brand century sets up upset USSA win

A century by Neil Brand trumped Janneman Malan’s three-figure effort as University Sports South Africa (USSA) claimed a thrilling two-run win over the South Africa Emerging team in match four of the One-Day Triangular Series in Pretoria on Thursday.

After winning the toss and bowling, the Emerging team conceded a mighty 297 for seven in the 50 overs in the field.

Brand led the way with a measured 100 off 124 balls, which included just six fours and two sixes.

Top-scorer Malan, meanwhile, was his dashing self as he thumped four sixes and eight fours in an 88-ball 108.

But with the finish line within sight, Gideon Peters (2/61) and Delano Potgieter (1/30) conceded just 12 from the final two overs to secure a much-needed win for USSA, their first of the campaign.

They are now up to four points on the log standings, one behind the SA Emerging side, who claimed a thumping bonus-point win in their first meeting, while Sri Lanka Emerging lead the way with two wins from two – a total of nine points.

The University side will be delighted with their effort on Thursday, though, with Brand leading the way alongside several other handy performances.

After Marco Jansen (3/54) and Dayyaan Galiem (2/52) removed Isma-eel Gafieldien (0) and Kabelo Sekhukhune (15), 39s by Hanno Kotze and Ruan de Swardt helped keep things together, either side of another fine half-century from Potgieter, who hit 70 (66 balls, 6 fours, 3 sixes).

The two highest scorers also shared in a 116-run fourth-wicket stand to lift their side to a strong total.

Tony de Zorzi (5) fell early in the SA Emerging innings, but Malan and Raynard van Tonder (71 off 102 balls, 6 fours) put together 172 for the second wicket to leave their side in command.

The chasing side continued to dominate thanks to Jason Smith’s 56 off 59 balls (2 fours, 1 six) and 40 by Matthew Breetzke.

But from 289 for three in the penultimate over, they were strangled by Peters and Potgieter, ending short on 295 for six.
