England fast bowler Tim Bresnan will miss his side's three-day game against the ICC Combined Associate & Affiliate XI due to a sore elbow.

The Yorkshire player underwent surgery on his right elbow over the winter but is not yet ready for a return to competitive action, leaving the door open for Chris Tremlett or Steven Finn to stake a claim for a Test place.

Tremlett is suffering from a minor eye infection but could still feature in the match, which gets underway in Dubai on 7th January.

"Tim Bresnan, in particular, has still got a bit of swelling in his elbow as a reaction to his operation, so he’s not quite ready yet," England captain Andrew Straus confirmed.

"We’re aiming for the second warm-up game with him. Chris Tremlett has a bit of a sore eye at the moment, but that is nothing of great concern to us. It’s just niggles more than anything."

Following the match against the top players from the Intercontinental Cup, England play a Pakistan Cricket Board XI in a three-day game beginning on 11th January.

The first Test against Pakistan in Dubai begins on 17th January.
