CGL recognizes the pivotal role that coaches play in the full sport development spectrum as they reflect on the season that was.

The development and training of coaches is extremely crucial as they are expected to coach technically and tactically but also assist with the physical, emotional, social and cognitive development.

Coaches create a suitable environment that promote the development of athletes’ life skills. CGL believes that coach education is by far the most important component of our game and coaches must have the appropriate qualifications and up to date training in order to deliver quality coaching sessions.

In the 2019/2020 season, CGL trained and developed over 115 coaches in the form of coaching courses that were conducted in different parts of CGL.

It was noticed, raised and addressed, the low uptake and participation of female coaches attending the courses. The CGL coaching unit remains committed to working with various sectors to attract more females into the coaching spectrum.

CGL had three coaches who recently qualified as CSA Level 3 coaches including our Senior Provincial Women Coach Shaun Pretorius.

CGL offered and continues to offer continuous education and training programs for all seasoned and qualified coaches in the forms of coaching forums, Coaching Acceleration Programs and Coaches Conferences.

CGL had over 200 coaches attending these programs with various newsletters being distributed to over 390 coaches around Central Gauteng.

As a result of the focus and hard work, many CGL coaches grew this season, namely:

  • Enoch Nkwe who was appointed as the Standard Bank Proteas interim Team Director, then appointed as the Standard Bank Proteas Assistant Coach.
  • Wandile Gwavu who started at CGL as Academy and U19 coach, then became the SA U19 Assistant coach. Shortly thereafter he became the Imperial Lions and Jozi Stars Assistant coach and he is currently the Imperial Lions interim Head coach who just won the 2019/2020 4-Day Domestic Series.
  • Other coaches who continue to grow are coaches like Sandile Masengemi (CGL Senior Provincial Coach) who was part of the Jozi Stars management team.
  • Siya Sibiya (CGL Academy Coach) who was SA U19 Assistant coach during the 2020 ICC U19 World Cup.
  • Bongani Ndaba who was shadowing the Imperial Lions Coaching staff during the 2019/2020 Momentums One Day Cup.
  • Bryan Patel and Teboho Ntsukunyane who shadowed Siya Sibiya during Academy, learning accordingly.

“It’s been as good year for CGL in the coaching space and I have no doubt that we’ll continue to go from strength to strength,” concluded Dumile Skade CGL Coaching Education Manager.
