Chennai Outrun Dolphins In Run-Fest
Chennai Super Kings 242-6 (Raina 90) beat
Dolphins 188 by 54 runs
Champions League T20 Group A, Bangalore
A magnificent innings of 90 from Suresh Raina helped Chennai Super Kings to an emphatic 54-run victory against Dolphins in Bangalore.
Having lost their opening match of the Champions League, Chennai came into this contest well aware that they needed a victory to get their campaign back on track.
The former champions did lose the wicket of the explosive West Indian opener Dwayne Smith (7) early on but this brought Suresh Raina and the New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum together, the pair putting on a 91-run partnership stand for the second wicket with a flurry of boundaries and sixes.
McCullum was eventually dismissed for a rapid 49 from 29 balls, however the onslaught continued as Raina dispatched the helpless Dolphin bowlers all over the M Chinnaswamy stadium.
Raina’s 90 featured an incredible eight sixes and four boundaries.
Raina’s dismissal was followed by a golden duck for his captain MS Dhoni, however brilliant hitting in the death overs by Ravindra Jadeja who made an unbeaten 40 from just 14 balls saw Chennai post an imposing score of 242 for six.
The Dolphins made an extremely positive start to their run chase, scoring 20 off the first over of their innings, but while a few of their players made starts no one really made the telling contribution that was required and when the Dolphins top scorer Cody Chetty was dismissed for 38 in the 11th over, the writing seemed to be on the wall.
Despite appearing to be out of the game, the Dolphins batted on valiantly, but they were bowled out on the very last ball of the innings when Andile Phehlukwayo was castled by Mohit Sharma; Sharma was the pick of the bowler as he took four for 41 from his four overs.
The result will give Chennai a much needed boost following their agonising loss against their IPL rivals Kolkata, just a few days ago.
