England are set to miss the services of all-rounder Chris Woakes and opening batsman Moeen Ali for their side’s inconsequential World Cup match against Afghanistan on Friday.

Both players suffered injuries during their team’s 15-run defeat to Bangladesh on Monday that handed England, a first-round exit in the tournament.

"Scans revealed Chris Woakes has a left third metatarsal stress reaction and Moeen Ali has a left sided abdominal strain," said a statement issued by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

"Both players have been ruled out of the match against Afghanistan on Friday and will be reassessed when the team returns to the UK."

Ali sustained a side-strain while bowling his off-breaks during the Bangladesh encounter whereas Woakes experienced discomfort on his left foot while batting later in the match.

Later on scans revealed complications that have ruled the duo out of England’s final league match on Friday.

This means that James Tredwell and Ravi Bopara, both of whom are yet to play in this World Cup, will get a look in for the match against Afghanistan.

Friday’s clash at the Sydney Cricket Ground will see England and Afghanistan face-off in a One-Day International for the first time.
