Comilla sneak past Rangpur in low-scoring thriller
Comilla Victorians 100-6 (Tamim 22) beat
Rangpur Riders 97 (Mahedi 4-22) by four wickets
35th game, Bangladesh Premier League, Dhaka
Mahedi Hasan and Mohammad Saifuddin shared seven wickets between them to bowl out Rangpur Riders for 97 runs following which Comilla Victorians managed to reach the target with four wickets and three deliveries to spare in the 35th game of the Bangladesh Premier League in Dhaka.
The win has confirmed a play-off spot for Comilla Victorians as they reached 16 points from 10 games while Rangpur are positioned fourth.
Chasing a modest total of 98, Tamim Iqbal (22) struck a six in the first over and with runs coming at a good pace, Comilla reached 22 for naught in the first three overs.
Mashrafe Mortaza (3-24) provided the initial breakthrough when he had Liton Das (3) caught at third man and soon Tamim was snared by Sohag Gazi (1-15). The wickets continued to tumble as Jos Buttler (5) was stumped in the ninth over.
Contributions from Shoaib Malik (20) and Marlon Samuels (16 not out) proved vital for Comilla and the target was down to 10 runs off the final two overs. Despite losing Saifuddin (5), a first ball six from Hasan Ali (6 not out) and a steady contribution from Samuels proved vital as they completed the chase in 19.3 overs with four wickets in hand.
Earlier, Rangpur was invited to bat first by Comilla Victorians and the openers Ziaur Rahman (6) and Chris Gayle (0) were snared by Mahedi (4-22).
Brendon McCullum (24) and Mohammad Mithun (17) were the only batsmen in the top order to cross the double-digit mark but regular strikes from Mahedi and Saifuddin (3-22) ensured the Riders were bowled out for 97 runs in 17.1 overs.
