An ODI series win for West Indies was a long time coming. The last time they had won an ODI series was back in 2014. Now, with some of the senior players returning and the inexperienced ones gaining experience over the years, coupled with their exploits in the Caribbean Premier League, the pieces have started to come together for West Indies.
After winning the first ODI comprehensively, the West Indies registered another victory in the second ODI against Afghanistan by a big margin of 47 runs. Batting first, openers Shai Hope and Evin Lewis had a 98-run partnership, albeit a bit on the slower side.
Shimron Hetmyer also chipped in with 34 but it was Nicholas Pooran's quickfire half-century that gave the innings the required impetus towards the end and helped them push towards the 250-run mark. Young right-arm medium pace bowler Naveen-ul-Haq was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan and snapped 3 wickets.
Afghanistan did not have a great start with opener Javed Ahmadi throwing his wicket away. Hazratullah Zazai and Rahmat Shah then had a decent partnership. Later on, Najibullah Zadran and Mohammad Nabi raised hopes but as they fell, the team collapsed and lost by 47 runs.
Although each of Sheldon Cottrell, Roston Chase and Hayden Walsh picked up three wickets each, Cottrell had the biggest impact.
West Indies are expected to whitewash the Afghans in the last match of the series on Monday.
Let's have a look at the probable playing XI of both teams:
Afghanistan- Hazratullah Zazai, Javed Ahmadi, Rahmat Shah, Ikram Ali Khil, Najibullah Zadran, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, Rashid Khan, Sharafuddin Ashraf, Naveen-ul-Haq, Mujeeb Ur Rahman
West Indies- Shai Hope, Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, Nicholas Pooran, Kieron Pollard, Jason Holder, Romario Shepherd, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph, Hayden Walsh
