The first game of the two-match Test series between Sri Lanka and New Zealand will be played at the Galle International Stadium in Sri Lanka, a venue where New Zealand are yet to win a Test match.

The last time New Zealand and Sri Lanka met in Tests, New Zealand dominated the visitors and won 1-0. However, those were conditions tailor-made for the New Zealand bowling line up. A good giveaway is that Tim Southee, who bases his game on swing bowling, ended as the highest wicket-taker.

This time, the conditions are different and hence the favourites tag has also switched places. The pace bowlers will be in business only for the first hour with the new ball in Sri Lankan conditions after which the ball will start coming on gun-barrel straight onto the bat.

New Zealand's Neil Wagner can be effective here as he has mastered the art of short-pitch bowling and on tracks where the ball does not come at a consistent pace and bounce, it is always tough to tackle such bowling.

The key to winning the series though will be negotiating the spinners. Sri Lanka, by default, have better quality spinners. This makes New Zealand's mainstays Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor all-the-more crucial for the visitors.

For Sri Lanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal and Kusal Perera will be the leading batsmen, while Akila Dananjaya and Dhananjaya De Silva would be their main threats with the ball.

Let's have a look at the squads of both teams:

New Zealand- Kane Williamson (c), Todd Astle, Tom Blundell, Trent Boult, Colin de Grandhomme, Tom Latham, Henry Nicholls, Ajaz Patel, Jeet Raval, Will Somerville, Mitchell Santner, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor, Neil Wagner, BJ Watling
