New Zealand have beaten Ireland in the first ODI by 1 wicket to take a lead in the 3 match ODI series by 1-0.

New Zealand won the toss and elected to field first. The decision proved to be good and New Zealand picked up 2 wickets in the powerplay overs. Andy McBrine and Harry Tector rebuilt the innings by engaging in a 60 run partnership for the 3rd wicket. McBrine made 38 before being dismissed. Harry Tector played brilliantly and went on to make a brilliant 113 off 117 balls. Little cameos down the order ensured that Ireland reached the 300 run mark and ended their innings at 300 for 9.

Chasing 300, New Zealand struggled right from the word go. They lost 2 wickets for just 19 runs. Skipper Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls soon followed the suit and New Zealand were in tatters. Martin Guptill played a fine knock of 51 but was dismissed at a wrong time from New Zealand's perspective. When Glenn Phillips was dismissed, it seemed to be curtains on New Zealand's hopes to win the match. Michael Bracewell then entered the scene and cautiously took his team closer to the target. When there were 10 overs remaining, he went berserk and smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground.

It was all down to 20 runs to get in the last over with only 1 wicket in hand. By all means, it looked impossible but Michael Bracewell had different plans. He smashed 24 runs in the first 5 balls and won the match for New Zealand from a losing position.
