As the Cricket World Cup approaches the knockout stages Paddy Power make England one of the outsiders to eventually lift the trophy after Andrew Strauss’ team limped through the group stages. England are now 9/1 to win the World Cup, having been 6/1 when the tournament started.

With no more room for mistakes England are 6/1 to finish runners-up, 3/1 to get knocked out in the semi finals and 4/7 they fall in the quarter final match against Sri Lanka.

South Africa’s relatively kind draw has seen Graeme Smith’s team leap-frog India to become the new favourites at 3/1 although whether the perennial chokers will cope with the new expectation upon them will remain to be seen. India are now 7/2 with champions Australia 5/1.

England, who have a good World Cup record against the Sri Lankans, are 11/8 to win Saturday’s quarter final with Murali and Co the 4/7 favourites. But with England’s roller-coaster ride in the tournament providing most of the entertainment so far will cricket fans have another nail-biter on Saturday? Paddy Power are offering 7/1 that England’s game is decided in the final over of the match.

Darren Haines, spokesman and cricket betting expert for Paddy Power, said: "Such is England’s unpredictability they are very hard to price. They could either play like the best team in the world or like a village green team so the 11/8 will tempt a lot of punters even though Sri Lanka are on home soil."

Should England see off Sri Lanka they will face the winners of South Africa and New Zealand for a place in the final. And that could well be the South Africans who are the shortest price of all eight teams to reach the semi finals at 4/11 to defeat New Zealand. In the other quarter finals India are 4/6 favourites to end the reign of Australia whilst Pakistan are 8/15 to beat the West Indies.
