Essex v Somerset

Match Summary

Somerset 326/9 (Hildreth 78*, S Cook 3/89)

Essex still to bat

Somerset won the toss at Chelmsford and asked for first batting use on what looked a fine surface on a warm day under blue skies. Abell's decision looked a good one as the Somerset openers got off to a great start with a partnership of 71 before Porter removed Abell for a well made 44.

The only Somerset batter not to fire was Banton who got a first ball beauty from S Cook (3/89) as the visitors were dismissed off the final ball of the day for 326 with Hildreth top scoring with 78.

Northamptonshire v Lancashire

Match Summary

Lancashire 155/ao (Jennings 87, Glover 5/34)

Northamptonshire 154/6 (Newton 47, Onions 2/30)

Lancashire chose to bat first here on a fresh-looking Northampton pitch under dark skies. It might have been a bowling day, but the used pitch looked like nobody would be wanting to bat last which probably swayed the decision. Northants made the most of conditions with Glover taking 5/34 in a wonderful spell of bowling.

Keaton Jennings found some form to record a well-made 87. Nobody could support him though and Lancashire were shot out for just 155. In reply, Northants started promisingly, but wickets began to fall and by the close only Rob Newton (47) looked comfortable as the hosts slumped to 154/6, hoping the tail will wag tomorrow.

Surrey v Hampshire

Match Summary

Surrey 239ao (Burns 78, Fuller 3/5)

Hampshire 99/5 (Northeast 49*, S Curran 3/49)

Surrey won the toss and batted here in the sunshine with Burns (78) and Stoneman getting things off to a good start before the latter was removed by a good catch by Alsop off the bowling of Taylor. Contributions all the way down for Surrey allowed the hosts to get to 239.

It could have been more but for an incredible spell by Fuller who's 3/5 cut short the Surrey fun, and left Surrey below par in their first innings.

In reply, Hampshire struggled, with Northeast still in at the close on 49* but with five batters back in the dressing room with the score only 99, Hampshire will need some magic from the lower order in the morning. Sam Curran was the threat for Surrey in his spell of 3/49.

Warwickshire v Kent

Match Summary

Warwickshire 279ao (Stone 66*, Podmore 5/96)

Kent 30/0 (Billings 17*)

Kent won the toss and inserted the hosts at Edgbaston. Billings was more than grateful as Rhodes edged the first ball of the match from Milnes through for a regulation catch behind.

Sibley went soon after, but Bell and Hain made a recovery for Warwickshire as the hosts posted 279 leaving a tricky period at the end of the day for Kent to negotiate.

30/0 at the close and Kent will feel very pleased with their days work.

Yorkshire v Gloucestershire

Match Summary

Yorkshire 211ao (Malan 95, Payne 4/30)

Gloucestershire 79/1 (Hammond 40*, Willey 1/41)

Yorkshire won the toss and chose to bat on day 1 at Cheltenham, with Malan putting the Gloucester bowlers to the sword, carving out an imperious 95 before he edged a beauty from Higgins through to Bracey. Payne for Gloucester came up trumps with a beautiful spell of bowling to record figures of 4/30 and thus restricting Yorkshire to 211.

A tricky period before the close was negotiated well by Gloucester as Hammond saw it through with 40* and the only loss being the captain Dent, who chased a wide Willy delivery and could only get a fine edge to Bairstow. Gloucester will resume tomorrow on 79/1
