Virtual County Championship - DIVISION ONE
Yorkshire v Kent
Match Summary
Kent 220ao (Stevens 40, Patterson 4/64)
Yorkshire 66/2 (Ballance 26*)
Kent won the toss here at Headingley and wanted to get the most out of what looked like a slightly uneven surface.
Kent scored well with contributions from the top order but the runs dried up with the introduction of Patterson (4/64) and the visitors fell slightly below par in being bowled out for 220, with only the ageless Stevens (40) there to help Kent up and over the 200 mark.
Yorkshire lost two early wickets in Lyth and Malan, but Ballance looks set on 26* for a big Day 2 score.
Lancashire v Somerset
Match Summary
Somerset 324/9 dec (Brookes 48*, Anderson 4/84)
Somerset won the toss and took charge of the game making first use of a flat looking wicket. The early loss of both Hildreth and Banton created a bit of pressure but partnerships developed and the score mounted.
Jack Brookes hit 48 quickly at the end of the day to give Somerset a good first innings total of 324/9 with Anderson picking up 4/84.
Surrey v Northamptonshire
Match Summary
Northamptonshire 275ao (Newton 88, Plunkett 5/85)
Surrey 40/2 (Stoneman 20)
Northants were put in on cloudy damp morning on a wicket tinged with green. As openers Vasconcelos and Newton passed the 100 opening stand, there will have been a few questions asked. Wakely hit a fine 58 before he was dismissed cruelly by one that nipped back and kept low, but the remainder of the order did little to counter the moving ball as the second string bowlers entered.
A debut for Nick Kimber who started nervously but a nice story in that during his second over, he picked up his first Championship wicket of fellow Oakham School alumni, Josh Cobb. Kimber went on to bowl with pace and menace collecting a further 2 wickets in his 3/79.
He was the perfect foil for Plunkett, who bowled tightly and caused problems for the Northants order and saw him pick up 5/85.
Essex v Hampshire
Match Summary
Essex 231ao (Lawrence 54, Fuller 3/8) & Hampshire 55/1 (Organ 26*, Quinn 2/37)
Essex won the toss and batted on a bright sunny morning on a pitch which looked as if it might flatten out into a beauty. Some green grass on the surface was enough for Abbott to nip one back into A Cooks pads early on and Hampshire were pleased to see the back of the ex England captain.
The next three built a solid foundation though, and with the exception of Pepper who got a snorter from Baker first ball runs came from all areas of the card. Fuller 3/8 bowled incredibly to finish off the tail cheaply. A steady run in to the end of the day with Hampshire closing one down on 55.
