Virtual  County Championship - DIVISION ONE

Lancashire v Somerset

Match Summary

Somerset 324/9 dec (Brookes 48*, Anderson 4/84) & 235ao (Davies 63, Onions 4/30)

Lancashire 304/8 dec (Vilas 106, C Overton 3/70) & 258/9 (Onions 109*)

Result – Lancashire won by 1 wicket

Points – Lancashire (22), Somerset (6)                                                                                                                                         When Graham Onions was joined by a smiling Jimmy Anderson with the score on 118/9 and Lancashire still requiring 140 to win the game, it will have been an ironic smile and one of a hopelessly lost cause.

Somerset and Brookes (6/73) had won the game. One wicket would come quickly, but a partnership developed. The partnership grew and with 24 still required by Lancashire Somerset were still nailed on favourites.

But 4 consecutive sixes from Onions stunned everyone and in the blink of an eye Lancashire were the most unlikely of winners, and Onions went to a memorable 100!

Essex v Hampshire

Match Summary

Essex 231ao (Lawrence 54, Fuller 3/8) & 430/9 dec (Browne 107, Dawson 3/79)

Hampshire 243ao (Dawson 69, Quinn 4/54) & Hampshire 363ao (Fuller 137*, S Cook 5/84)

Result - Essex won by runs 55 runs

Points – Essex (20), Hampshire (4)

Despite the best efforts of Hampshire on this thrilling final day, Essex were the victors and it was perhaps fitting that with just seven balls left in the match, S Cook took the final wicket to reach his 5th wicket in the innings.

An incredibly resolute 137* from Fuller gave Hampshire a hope of more in this game, but he was left helpless at the non-strikers end as the final wicket fell and Essex recorded a famous victory, leaving Hampshire devastated after so much hard work to stay in the game.

The following Round 6 matches were completed on day 3 - there were wins for Yorkshire over Kent and Surrey over Northants.

Yorkshire v Kent

Match Summary

Kent 220ao (Stevens 40, Patterson 4/64) & 56/6 (Kuhn 23, Bresnan 4/30) & 176ao Bell-Drummond 58, Bresnan 4/30)

Yorkshire 307/9 dec (Bresnan 113, Milnes 4/78) & 92/4 (Ballance 42, Milnes 2/43)

Result – Yorkshire won by 6 wickets

Points – Yorkshire (22) , Kent (4)

Only Bell-Drummond (58) managed a score in Kent's inadequate 176 all out and Yorkshire set about the chase with positivity and in some hurry to get on the golf course.

The winning runs came up just after lunch with Ballance contributing a quickfire 42. Milnes (2/43) and co did their best and saw off 4 Yorkshire batters, but the result was never in doubt after Bresnan's day 2 heroics.

Surrey v Northamptonshire

Match Summary

Northamptonshire 275ao (Newton 88, Plunkett 5/85) & 165ao (Cobb 65, Dunn 5/67)

Surrey 278ao (Foakes 112*, Glover 3/46) & 164/8 (Burns 31, Procter 3/40)

Result – Surrey won by 2 wickets

Points – Surrey (20), Northants (4)

No recovery for Northants today as Surrey keep up the pressure and finish the job with Cobb (65) top scoring for Northants and Matt Dunn the star taking 5/67 for Surrey.

A small target of just 162 for Surrey was never in doubt and despite losing 8 wickets on a crumbling pitch they were always in control with Burns looking good for his 31 and Proctor giving Northants a chance with his 3/40.
