Pakistan 308-7 (Babar Azam 69, Haris Sohail 89; Lungi Ngidi 3-64, Imran Tahir 2-41)
South Africa 259-9 (Quinton de Kock 47, Faf du Plessis 63; Shadab Khan 3-50, Wahab Riaz 3-46)
Result – Pakistan won by 49 runs
It was a do or die game for both teams. A win for Pakistan was essential to keep their campaign alive after a defeat against India in their last match. South Africa too had had a terrible run and a loss in this match meant elimination.
Pakistan openers Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman added 81 runs for the first wicket as the team looked determined to win from the outset. After both got out for 44 each, skipper Babar Azam maintained the momentum through the middle.
But it was Haris Sohail, whose quick runs towards the end made all the difference. The batsman had sat out till now, but his 59-ball run rampage which yielded 89 runs meant Pakistan had the cushion of those extra 20 runs.
Shadab Khan 3-50 and Wahab Riaz 3-46 then ensured that despite the knocks from Quinton de Kock (47) and Faf du Plessis (63), South Africa were always behind in the game and suffered a 49-run defeat.
This was Pakistan's sixth win against South Africa from the seven matches between the two sides in ICC events over the last ten years.
