In match number 39 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, expectations were not high that Sri Lanka and West Indies would treat fans with something special. But they did it anyway.
Batting first, Sri Lanka posted a huge 338/6 total on the board from their 50 overs spurred on by a 93-run opening stand. Kusal Perera (64) gave the team a good start but it was youngster Avishka Fernando (104) who quickened things up through the middle.
Chasing the stiff target on a two-paced surface and at 84/4 in the 18th over, Windies' inning was going nowhere. That's when the ever impressive Nicholas Pooran kickstarted the resurgence with a stand with skipper Jason Holder.
All-rounder Fabian Allen then produced a blistering fifty to turn the tables for a moment. With the left-arm spinner giving company to Pooran, West Indies were looking favourites but as it happened many-a-time in this tournament, the duo threw it away.
Pooran was dismissed by Angelo Mathews who bowled his first over in 18 months and became part of the cricketing folklore. Lasith Malinga (3/55) was the best bowler for Sri Lanka as expected.
