CWC 2019 Recap: Finch and Cummins too good for flat Afghanistan
A Cricket World series, CWC 2019 Recap looks at all the high-octane encounters from the last year's ODI World Cup: from Jofra Archer's bouncers to Rohit Sharma's hundreds and from Mitchell Starc's yorkers to Virat Kohli's antics.
Afghanistan 207 (Rahmat Shah 43, Gulbadin Naib 51, Rashid Khan 27; Pat Cummins 3-40, Adam Zampa 3-60, Marcus Stoinis 2-37)
Australia 209-3 (Aaron Finch 56, David Warner 89*)
Result – Australia won by 7 wickets
The 4th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 between Afghanistan and Australia may not have involved high-voltage drama but the match played at the County Ground in Bristol was essential for the Australian team, and one man in particular - David Warner.
Coming back after a one-year ban for his involvement in the ball-tampering scandal, Warner was completely out of nick. The good thing though was that he stuck at the surface and scored those ugly runs.
While Finch plundered 66 runs off just 49 deliveries at a strike rate of 134.69, it was tough going for Warner who managed 89 off 114 deliveries at a strike rate of 78.07. But, he remained unbeaten and took Australia to a seven-wicket victory with more than 15 overs to spare.
Earlier, Rahmat Shah 43, Gulbadin Naib 51 and Rashid Khan 27 were the top scorers for Afghanistan while Pat Cummins, Adam Zampa and Marcus Stoinis were among the wickets.
