CWC 2019 Recap: Malinga and Perera save Sri Lanka blushes against Afghanistan
A Cricket World series, CWC 2019 Recap looks at all the high-octane encounters from the last year's ODI World Cup: from Jofra Archer's bouncers to Rohit Sharma's hundreds and from Mitchell Starc's yorkers to Virat Kohli's antics.
In the 7th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 at the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, Sri Lanka got off to a great start with openers Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera, adding 92 on a surface that was assisting both the pacers and the spinners, under cloudy skies.
But, once the first wicket fell, the Lankans imploded in bizarre fashion, losing their last nine wickets for just 57 runs. Mohammad Nabi started the Lankan collapse, picking up four wickets for just 30.
After Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 201 from 36.5 overs, Afghanistan were given a revised target of 187 from 41 overs as per the DLS method. Naib's men started well too but once the opening stand was broken, wickets fell in a heap. Najibullah and his captain repaired things with a partnership but the Lankans broke the stand just when it was threatening.
An inspired spell of seam bowling from Nuwan Pradeep and a yorker masterclass from Malinga proved too hot to handle for Afghanistan as they fell well short by 34 runs.
