CWC 2019 Recap: Sri Lanka lose 7 wickets for 42 after Finch blitz
A Cricket World series, CWC 2019 Recap looks at all the high-octane encounters from the last year's ODI World Cup: from Jofra Archer's bouncers to Rohit Sharma's hundreds and from Mitchell Starc's yorkers to Virat Kohli's antics.
Australia 334 - 7 (Aaron Finch 153, Steve Smith 73; Dhananjaya de Silva 2-40, Isuru Udana 2-57)
Sri Lanka 247 (Dimuth Karunaratne 97, Kusal Perera 52; Mitchell Starc 4-55, Kane Richardson 3-47)
Result – Australia won by 87 runs
Explosive knocks from Aaron Finch (153), Steve Smith (73) and Glenn Maxwell (46) took Australia to 334. At 115/0, Sri Lanka were well placed in the chase but lost 7 wickets for just 42 runs to lose the game.
Both after Karunaratne and Kusal Perera gave them a great start. Sri Lanka were 115/0 in the 16th over in chase of 335. Australia were scratching their heads with Perera playing some audacious shots. And Karunaratne rode a bit of luck with those inside edges, but he gave great company and even had an excellent strike-rate. But this is what the Aussies are all about. They never gave up.
Starc started it all by castling Perera and then came back to take three in no time. Behrendorff, Richardson and Cummins joined the party to strangle the innings. Starc looked like taking a wicket every ball in that spell of his and it showed in the way the lower-order were moving away from the sticks in fear of getting hit.
After batting collapses against New Zealand and Afghanistan, Sri Lankan batsmen slipped again when they had an upset for the taking.
