CWC 2019 Recap: The day it all began - England's ascendency and South Africa's troubles
A Cricket World series, CWC 2019 Recap looks at all the high-octane encounters from the last year's ODI World Cup: from Jofra Archer's bouncers to Rohit Sharma' hundreds and from Mitchell Starc's yorkers to Virat Kohli's antics.
With each team playing every other team once in the league stage, ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 had to be about skill, with the luck factor minimised. As teams entered the main tournament after the warm-up games, it was all about weighing each other up.
The game was dominated by two charismatic individuals - Jofra Archer and Ben Stokes.
Archer, whose inclusion in the England team after tweaking the regulations had led to heated discussions, showed his worth in the very first match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019. He prised out the wickets of Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis and Rassie van der Dussen, devastating the Protea middle order. His bumper which hit Hashim Amla flush on the helmet also created a fear factor among the South African batsmen.
Ben Stokes was at his all-round best, as usual. He struck 89 off just 79 to take England to 311 and then picked up two wickets while being miserly. His outrageous catch at the boundary - the best of the tournament - also invigorated the fans.
