Darren Sammy predicts CPL 2016 will be a wonderful tournament
St Lucia Zouks all-rounder and West Indies T20 captain Darren Sammy previews the Caribbean Premier League 2016 and predicts it will be a "wonderful tournament".
Speaking to Unibet ahead of the tournament, which gets underway when his side meet Trinbago Knight Riders this evening (29th June), he says he is looking forward to getting into the action.
"I am very excited, it's the biggest party in sport with some of the best players in the world all on show at once on beautiful Caribbean islands and Miami," he said.
"It's a wonderful tournament, there is an atmosphere you won't find anywhere outside of the Caribbean," he added.
It has already been a momentous year in cricket for the West Indies, after both their men's and women's sides won the respective ICC World T20 tournaments in India, and that followed on from the Under-19s winning their World Cup earlier in the year.
Asked whether that success will contribute to this year's CPL, Sammy is in no doubt that it will be a factor.
"I believe with the success of our T20 teams, both men and women, it has created even more interest," he said.
"The Caribbean Premier League has always been one to generate interest and excitement and to now have all the guys back from the World T20 in the Caribbean.
"I think it will be the first time that all of us will be back - the Gayles, the Bravos, Carlos Brathwaite, it's going to be exciting."
The six teams in the tournament all play 10 matches before play-off week begins in early August, and the CPL generally features lots of close matches between closely-matched teams, which is just one of the reasons why the fans turn out in their numbers.
"I can almost feel the buzz and the fans can't wait to come out and be part of this wonderful tournament," Sammy concluded.
