De Bruyn special not enough for Titans

A spectacular career-best 183 off 142 balls by Theunis de Bruyn was not enough for the Multiply Titans after the VKB Knights produced a spirited chase to end their Momentum One-Day Cup campaign on a positive note with a five-wicket DLS victory in Bloemfontein on Saturday.

The Standard Bank Proteas batsman sizzled 20 fours and four sixes in his innings to help the runaway log winners amass 323 for seven after winning the toss and batting.

But chasing a revised 282 in 40 overs, Rudi Second crunched 55 off only 25 balls in a knock that included five sixes and two fours.

Support also came via Andries Gous (60 not out off 41 balls, 8 fours), Ryan McLaren (55 not out off 59 balls, 4 fours) and Raynard van Tonder (60 off 63 balls, 6 fours) as the hosts won with six balls remaining.

Despite the result, the Central Franchise bowed out of the competition after they could only end fifth, but they will take plenty of heart heading into the final 20-over leg of the season.

Defeat for the Titans, meanwhile, meant they ended the regular season with back-to-back losses. But they still finished top of the charts and will host the World Sports Betting Cape Cobras in one of two semi-finals next week. The other will be between the Hollywoodbets Dolphins and Warriors in Durban.

The Titans, who have fielded an understrength team since qualifying, had De Bruyn to thank for bossing them to a 324 target.

He ploughed the bowling all over the Mangaung Oval on his way to a best-ever score and fourth career ton that beat his 152 not out for the Titans against the Warriors at Port Elizabeth in 2014/15.

Tony de Zorzi’s 40 was the only other score of significance as all the bowlers, bar Marchant de Lange (1/47) travelled. The Knights then reached 53 for one in the 10th over when rain intervened, forcing the calculators to readjust things.

Van Tonder continued to lay the early platform, before Second then exploded.

There was still work to do, though, and Gous and McLaren shared an unbroken 109-run sixth wicket stand to complete a wonderful job for the home side as they ended the term in fifth spot.
