Indian fast bowler Mohammad Shami has been ruled out of the five-match One-Day International series against Sri Lanka and replaced by Dhawal Kulkarni.

Shami has been sidelined for the series, which runs from 2nd to 16th November and Kulkarni has been added to the squad for the first three matches.

Kulkarni has played a single ODI for his country, against England earlier this year at Edgbaston.

He failed to take a wicket in seven overs but has become something of a regular squad member for India this year.

Shami's absence may give him another opportunity to press his claims for inclusion in India's squad for the 2015 World Cup.

India ODI squad: Virat Kohli (captain), Varun Aaron, Ravichandran Ashwin, Shikhar Dhawan, Dhawal Kulkarni, Amit Mishra, Ravindra Jadeja, Akshar Patel, Ajinkya Rahane, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Wriddiman Saha, Ishant Sharma, Murali Vijay, Umesh Yadav
