Easterns celebrate all 3 Senior provincial trophies in 12 months
The news that CSA board of directors and Members council endorsed Graeme Smith’s decision to award the CSA 3-day competition to Easterns Cricket Union and KZN as joint winners means that Easterns effectively have got their hands on all 3 provincial competition titles in the past 12 months.
In April 2019, Easterns beat Northerns in the CSA one-day cup final at Supersport Park and then landed the Provincial T20 cup when the team beat KZN Inland at Willowmoore Park in a nail-biting final.
This year’s 3-day competition was going down to the wire before COVID-19 hit and cricket was suspended in the country. This meant that the title was given to the winners of both pools, being Easterns and KZN.
During the 3-day competition, Andrea Agathangelou starred with the bat, scoring 676 runs at an average of 67.6 with a top score of 313. Yaseen Valli was also a good performer, scoring 510 runs at 42.5 with a top score of 230. The pair of them shared a record 1st wicket partnership of 485.
Clayton August was the star with the ball, getting 39 wickets at an average of 17 with a best of 7/40. Ryan Cartwright, his new ball partner, picked up 32 wickets at an average of 22. Wesley Coulentianos led the team with distinction during the campaign.
Over and above the success of the team for the past 12 – 18 months, individual players are making strides in their careers with no less than 7 players securing Franchise contracts around the country. We also had 4 players pick up MSL contracts, the most by any Senior provincial team. The union, who previously only had won 1 title in its history (4-day champs in 2002), now have 3 trophies in the past 12 months. Cricket in the East is pumping!
