Tour game, Adelaide, day three
A terrific display of fast bowling saw England reduce Cricket Australia XI to 70 for seven at stumps on day three while defending 267 runs in the tour game in Adelaide.
Chasing the total, CA XI were left reeling by a fiery spell from Chris Woakes (4-17), who removed the top order Jake Carder (0), Nick Larkin (2), Ryan Gibson (9) and Will Pucovski (1) while Craig Overton (2-10) accounted for Tim Paine (5) and Jason Sangha (5).
It was a matter of time before James Anderson (1-12) also joined the wicket-taking act when he had Simon Milenko (1) caught behind leaving CA XI reeling at 25 for seven.
Matthew Short (28 not out) and Gurinder Sandhu (17 not out) finally managed to arrest the slide with their unbeaten 45 runs stand for the eighth wicket to take the total to 70 for seven at the end of the day. The still need an unlikely 198 more runs to win on the final day.
Earlier, England started their second innings with a lot of promise after openers Alastair Cook (32) and Mark Stoneman (51) sharing 79 runs for the first wicket. Stoneman even went on to complete his third consecutive fifty in the tour.
However, Milenko (5-34) pulled back things for CA XI with a five-wicket haul as the visitors lost seven wickets for just 45 runs before Jonny Bairstow (61 not out) with his unbeaten 66 ball knock lifted the total to 207 runs before they were bowled out.
