Former England captain Graham Gooch is to join up with England in South Africa and assist the coaching staff on a temporary basis.

Gooch played 118 Tests for England and remains his country's leading run-scorer in the longest format of the game with 8,900 and he is currently batting coach at Essex, the county with which he played his first-class cricket.

He will arrive in South Africa this weekend, linking up with the England Performance Squad in Pretoria before joining the full squad in time for the four-match Test series which begins on 16th December.

"Graham is rightly regarded as one of the best batting coaches in international cricket and we are delighted to have secured his services for a key period of our preparations leading up to the 1st Test," ECB Managing Director Hugh Morris said in a statement.
