Indian off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has been added to the One-Day International squad against South Africa as cover for Ravichandran Ashwin, who picked up a side strain in the first game in Kanpur.

Ashwin sustained the injury during his initial spell which only lasted 3.2 overs, forcing him to go off the field to receive treatment.

The 29-year-old managed to come back onto the field after six overs, but could only bowl one over in his second spell.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed the injury to Ashwin in a media release and stated that the off-spinner will be assessed by the medical team.

“Ashwin sustained a left side strain injury during the first Paytm One day International against South Africa at Green Park, Kanpur on 11th October 2015," said the release.

“After making a detailed assessment of the injury, the BCCI medical team will confirm the time frame required for Ashwin to fully recover from the injury.

“Harbhajan Singh has been included in the Indian squad, and will join the team before the second match of the series in Indore.”

Since making his comeback to the Indian ODI side in the series against Zimbabwe in July this year, Harbhajan has only taken four wickets from three games.

Ashwin has been India’s second highest wicket-taker in the ODI format in 2015 with 21 scalps from 13 games, averaging just 24.57.
