Josh Hazlewood took a five-wicket haul and Steve Smith hit an unbeaten half-century as Australia launched a fightback on day two of the second Test against India in Brisbane.
Chris Rogers also made a half-century to help Australia close on 221 for four replying to India's score of 408 all out.
Hazlewood returned five for 68 as India added just 97 runs to their overnight score of 311 for four.
Ajinkya Rahane made 82 but Nathan Lyon also took three wickets and Australia got the chance to start their reply earlier than many would have anticipated.
Rogers hit 55 and Smith was unbeaten on 65 when bad light ended play early with the home side trailing by 187 runs.
Australia lead the series 1-0 after a 48-run win in Adelaide but India, thanks to a Murali Vijay century, started this Test the stronger.
