
ICC T20 WC: Balbirnie stars as Ireland surprise England in a rain-hit clash








Ireland inflicted a massive upset as they beat England by five runs as per the DLS Method in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Wednesday.
Asked to bat, Ireland posted 157 in 19.2 overs and in response England was struggling at 105 for five when rain held up play.
The play started 15 minutes late owing to rain and then there was further interrupton owing to rain.
Ireland was well served by a 82 run stand for the second wicket between captain Andy Balbirnie and Lorcan Tucker (34). After Tucker fell with the score on 103, there was a collapse as England struck at regular intervals. Liam Livingstone came close to a hat-trick with his leg-spin. Towards the end Ireland lost wickets at regular intervals. Balbirnie fell for 62 off 47 balls with five boundaries and two sixes. Ireland was bowled out for 157 in 19.2 overs. For England, the best bowlers were Mark Wood (3-34), Liam Livingstone (3-17) and Sam Curran (2-31).
In their response, England was reduced to 29 for three. They were struggling as England scratched around trying to get the innings back on track. Dawid Malan (35) held the innings together as wickets fell around him. Ben Stokes fell to a reckless shot. There was a 38 run fourth wicket stand between Malan and Harry Brook which helped the chase. But England fell behind the asking rate as rain played spoilsport with the innings struggling at 105 for five in 14.3 overs. According to the DLS method, England was five runs behind the par score. Ireland celebrated a famous win with their fans. Josh Little (2-16) was the best bowler for Ireland.
