ICC T20 WC: Joseph fires West Indies to a fine win over Zimbabwe
West Indies came back into reckoning in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup in fine style with a 31 run win over Zimbabwe in a Group B first round encounter at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart.
After opting to bat, West Indies posted a mere 153 for seven in their 20 overs and in response Zimbabwe were bowled out for 122 in 18.2 overs.
Earlier, West Indies were well served by a 49 run stand between Johnson Charles (45) and Evin Lewis (15). Then there was bit of a collapse as the innings slipped from 77 for one to 101 for six. West Indies seemed to be in deep trouble. Rovman Powell (28) then added 49 runs for the seventh wicket with Akeal Hosein (23). In the end West Indies finished on 153 for seven in their 20 overs.
For Zimbabwe the best bowlers were Sikandar Raza (3-19) and Blessing Muzarabani (2-38).
In their response Zimbabwe got off to a flying start. But after stand-in captain Regis Chakabva fell for 13 the innings slipped into deep mess. Zimbabwe went from being 47 for one to 79 six. The innings never really recovered from the loss of wickets. Towards the end Luke Jongwe (29) did try to use the long handle to good effect, but he just did not succeed without any support. In the end Zimbabwe was bowled out for 122 in 18.2 overs. For West Indies the best bowlers were Alzarri Joseph (4-16) and Jason Holder (3-12).
