ICC T20 WC: Miller strikes take South Africa across the line

South Africa pulled off a fine four-wicket win over Sri Lanka with a ball to spare in their Super 12 stage game in the ICC T20 World Cup at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Sri Lanka after being asked to bat were bowled out for 142 and South Africa chased down the target in 19.5 overs to finish on 146 for six.

Earlier, Pathum Nissanka carried his bat in the Sri Lanka innings. Barring a strong 41 run second wicket stand between Nissanka (72: 58b, 6x4, 3x6) and Charith Asalanka brought Sri Lanka back in the match. Thereafter there was regular fall of wickets, except captain Dasun Shanaka none of the other batsmen got into double figures. Sri Lanka did not finish on a high, but the score they got of 142 all out gave them a fighting chance. For South Africa the best bowler was Tabraiz Shamsi (3-17) and the other wicket-takers were Dwaine Pretorius (3-17) and Anrich Nortje (2-27).

In their response, South Africa was reduced to 49 for three. Then a 47 run fourth wicket stand between Aiden Markram and captain Temba Bavuma (46) revived the chase. But then Wanindu Hasaranga claimed a hat-trick to break the back of South Africa batting line-up. Hasaranga dismissed Markram, Bavuma and Pretorius get to his feat. But then there was an unbroken 34 run seventh wicket stand between David Miller (23 n.o.) and Kagiso Rabada which sealed the deal. Miller smacked Lahiru Kumara for two sixes in the last over to get South Africa across the line. South Africa finished on 146 for six in 19.5 overs.

For Sri Lanka the best bowlers were Hasaranga (3-20) and Dushmantha Chameera (2-27).
