ICC T20 WC: UAE knock out Namibia, Netherlands through to Super 12
UAE knocked Namibia out of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup thanks to a narrow seven run win in their final Group A first round match at the Kardinia Park Stadium in Geelong on Thursday afternoon.
Sri Lanka and Netherlands have made it to the Super 12 stage from Group A.
After opting to bat, UAE posted 148 for three in their 20 overs and in response Namibia were restricted to 141 for eight in their 20 overs.
Earlier, UAE started off well with Muhammad Waseem (50: 41b, 1x4, 3x6) adding 39 for the opening wicket with Vriitya Aravind. Later, Waseem added 58 runs for the second wicket with captain CP Rizwan (43). Then towards the end Basil Hameed used the long handle to good effect finishing on 25 off 14 balls. UAE finished on 148 for three in their 20 overs.
In their response, Namibia kept losing wickets at regular intervals. They were first reduced to 46 for five in 7.5 overs. Later, they were completely dismantled and were tottering at 69 for seven. That's when David Wiese teamed up with Ruben Trumpelmann to add 70 runs for the eighth wicket. But just when it seemed like Wiese would be able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, there was a twist as he was dismissed in the final over. In the end, Namibia finished on 141 for eight in their 20 overs. For UAE, the best bowlers were Basil Hameed (2-17) and Zahoor Khan (2-20).
