The Imperial Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) Women and CGL Senior Provincial Men’s sides are ready to begin their 2020/2021 condensed season as they enter the Bio-Secure Environment (BSE) in Cape Town and Potchefstroom respectively this Saturday ahead of their opening fixtures early next week.

The newly named Imperial Central Gauteng Lions Women team will be keen to repay the faith shown to the side by logistics giants - Imperial - who have been announced as naming rights sponsors in a deal which aims to further improve Women’s cricket in the CGL Cricket Union.

Despite the side last playing competitive cricket 12 months ago, Imperial CGL Women’s coach Shaun Pretorius is confident that the team is ready to hit the ground running when they open their campaign on Tuesday 16th March 2021.

“We have tried to do the best with our resources during the pandemic to keep the ladies fit and sharp. We also tried to stimulate their minds with various workshops and webinars. We have four players who played the Women’s Super League in December and would have a feel of the conditions. We go there positive with the aim of doing the Union proud and repaying the faith the sponsors have shown in us.” Imperial CGL Women’s coach Shaun Pretorius commented.

CGL Senior Provincial Men’s team will be sharing the sentiments of their female counterparts as they too prepare to return to competitive action after a prolonged break due to the Covid19 pandemic.

The side led by Coach Sandile Masengemi will play the CSA Three-day and One Day competitions in a condensed BSE in Potchefstroom from Tuesday 16th March 2021.

CGL Cricket Services Manager Reuben Mandlazi is pleased that both provincial sides can play cricket competitively again with a lot to play for off the back of the new domestic structure being announced for next season.

“It is great for the CGL women’s team to head into the tournament with Imperial on board as the new naming rights sponsor, it will grow women’s cricket. During the lockdown our men and women players and coaches have been left frustrated but we created innovative initiatives to keep players and coaches engaged through webinars and online group training. We are excited to see them showcase their skill and fly the CGL flag very high both on and off the field.

For this year’s competitions there will be no finals but emphasis is on the players doing well to give themselves opportunities moving into the new season. We wish all our players a wonderful experience in the upcoming BSE and thank our sponsors, staff, coaches, players and all stakeholders involved for creating a high performance environment for these special players to flourish in” Cricket Services Manager Reuban Mandlazi concludes.
