India are staring at a difficult situation in the first Test of the Anthony D'Mello Trophy at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

On Monday, India ended the day at 39 for one as they set out to chase a historic 420 to win the Test.

Earlier, India was bowled out for 337, 241 runs behind England. The tourists chose to bat again and were bowled out for 178, to set India a historic 420 for a win in the first Test.

In the morning, Washington Sundar (85: 138b, 201m, 12x4, 2x6) added 80 runs for the seventh wicket with Ravichandran Ashwin (31:91b, 126m, 3x4, 1x6). That delayed the inevitable. Eventually, James Anderson cleaned up the tail to leave Sundar stranded.

England's best bowlers were Dom Bess (4-76), Jack Leach (2-105), Anderson (2-46) and Jofra Archer (2-75).

The England second innings was perplexing.

They delayed the declaration till late in the day. They slowed down the scoring and kept everyone wondering about their next move.

Captain Joe Root again top-scored with a quick 32 ball 40.

For India the best bowler was Ashwin (6-61). The other bowler to claim wickets were Shahbaz Nadeem (2-66), Ishant Sharma (1-24) and Jasprit Bumrah (1-26).

During the process of the innings, Ishant claimed his 300th Test wicket when he dismissed Root.

The chase for India began on the wrong note when they lost their opener Rohit Sharma.

India need a further 381 runs for an unlikely win.
