India won the toss and decided to bat against the West Indies, at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot in the 1st Test.

Prithvi Shaw 134, Cheteshwar Pujara 86 and Virat Kohli 72* put India in a commanding position at the end of Day 1 of the first Test match. After the early loss of KL Rahul for nought, the two Indian batsmen Prithvi Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara put on 206 for the second wicket.

The Windies hit back later in the day to leave India 364-4 at the close but in a commanding position with captain Virat Kohli 72*, still at the crease.
